Self sufficient cleaning products

Home Made Cleaning Products

A great money saving idea for people wishing to lead a more self sufficient life. Supermarket bought cleaning products are much harsher on the environment and your wallet than home made versions. Home made products will be much better for your health especially for people with respiratory conditions such as asthma.

Vinegar

White vinegar makes for a natural and cheap cleaning product. It's a natural disinfectant and deodoriser. People worry that using vinegar will make your house smell of...well vinegar. Don't worry once it dries any smell should vanish.

  • To use: dilute the vinegar with water: one part vinegar to one part water. Be careful not to use on marble surfaces. You can use the solution in spray as you would with a normal kitchen/bathroom cleaner. It's also great to use when mopping floors.
  • You can use in undiluted on your toilet bowl.
  • Use as a self sufficient fabric conditioner. Just add half cup of vinegar when your machine is on the rinse cycle. This is recommended if you or a family member has sensitive skin as it helps breaks down the detergent.

Baking Soda

  • It's great for scouring the dirt and grime. It's especially effective at cleaning away soap rings in baths. To use simply add to sponge or cloth and wipe.
  • Unblock slow moving drains. Pour down drains with some hot water and leave for 24 hours. Rinse out thoroughly afterwards.
  • Baking soda is a deoderiser too. It can be used to get rid of smells in cupboard or even the fridge. Just put in a box and leave untill the smell subsides.

Lemon

  • Take a lemon half and dip in baking soda to clean stains and soap scum
  • Mix half a cup of lemon juice with one cup of olive oil to make a hardwood furniture polish.
  • Use to clean copper and brass surfaces.
