Make your own dandelion root coffee

Dandelion Root Coffee

A great self sufficient and healthy alternative to shop bought coffee. The good news is that it’s very easy to make and it’s caffeine free. It's also an efficient was to dispose of what is a very common weed. It’s good for your liver and high in vitamins and minerals.

Ingredients

  • Just dandelion roots

Method

  1. Dig up your roots. The best time to harvest the roots is in the autumn when they are nutrient rich.

  2. Wash them

  3. Chop them up into small chunks (about the same size as diced onions) and wash again. Strain them.

  4. Place on a baking tray and put in the oven at 130°C. Roast until they darken and dry out. You want to get rid of all the water content. Be careful not to burn them. It will take about an hour – but keep checking.

  5. Grind your roots in a pestle and mortar until you have a ‘coffee granule’ like consistency

That’s it. To drink I recommend using a tea strainer or a coffee plunger. It should have a similar colour to regular coffee. It tastes bitter like the real stuff. A little sugar can help if you are not sweet enough!
