Make your own Bokashi EM
Bokashi EM (effective microorganisms) can be purchased online. They can be quite expensive. The process below will create a serum that will be full of Lactic acid producing bacteria (lactobacillus bacteria). This is the most important of the three different microbes you would get in commercially bought.
Here's an easy way to create your very own happy self sufficient EM.
Ingredients
- Rice
- Water
- Milk
Method
-
Take a large mixing bowl or bucket and add 2 parts water to every 1 part rice. Don't worry about what type of rice. When I tried this I just used what I had in the larder.
-
Give it a good stir then drain the water into a separate container. You are done with the rice now. Set aside and eat later!
-
Cover the container with a cloth so air can get in.
-
Store in cool and dry place. I left mine in my larder for about a week.
-
After a week add some milk to the mixture. 10 parts milk to every 1 rice water. You may need a bigger container to do this.
-
Now leave for two weeks. The mixture should start to ferment. You will see the solids rise to the top. Get rid of these by straining with muslin cloth or good strainer.
-
You done! The resulting liquid should be yellow in colour.
